US Army Finding NEMO Capable
The U.S. Army has been putting Patria's NEMO 120mm Turreted Mortar System (TMS) to the test in a series of live-fire exercises.
The NEMO system, integrated onto a U.S.-made Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV) and controlled via its Fire Direction System (FCD), has been put through its paces at the Maneuver Warfighter Conference in Fort Moore, Georgia, earlier this week.
The remote-controlled NEMO (NEw MOrtar) mortar system is is a lighter version of the AMOS mortar system in use by Finland's armed forces since 2013. NEMO is capable of both direct and indirect fire missions either while stationary or on the move. It can execute Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) firing patterns, enabling up to six rounds to impact on a target at the same time.
The light yet armoured system has been designed to be easily installed on both wheeled and tracked vehicles, as well as sea vessels. At present it's operated by forces in Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Arab Emirates; Sweden's Navy has also ordered two units for trials. As well as the U.S., the Czech Republic and Spain are other potential buyers at present.
In a recent press statement Janne Räkköläinen, the global markets Senior Vice President for Patria, commented: "We are extremely pleased to witness the results of our successful cooperation already so far with the U.S. Army and our industry partners.
"Given the global interest in Patria NEMO’s unique capabilities, we are excited to continue the discussions with the U.S. regarding the next steps and eventually getting Patria NEMO to the U.S. warfighters, increasing their survivability, lethality and manoeuvrability."
