How The Baltic States Are Changing NATO's Maneuverist Approach

Advances in fortification technology are being capitalised on by the Baltic states, who are upending how the West conducts modern warfare. For decades, the West has been averse to manning static positions. Instead, it has been focused, doctrinally and procurement-wise, on mechanized assaults that bypass strong points to envelop and beat enemies into submission. Now, that school of thought might change a bit, with Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania all investing millions into building a defensive line known as the “Baltic Line.”

According to Assistant Professor at Leiden University Dr. Lukas Milevski, all the Baltic states are set to build extensive fortifications that differ slightly in character. Latvian fortifications will consist of anti-tank ditches, dragon’s teeth, and mines situated in front of bunkers, which would counter any Russian attempt to manoeuvre into Baltic territory.
