Chancellor Of Exchequer Gives MOD A 3 Billion Boost
Finally, the fog of uncertainty has cleared and instead of introducing cuts, the new government will increase the defence budget by nearly three billion pounds. The announcement comes months after Chancellor Rachel Reeves asked the MOD to identify ways the government could cut spending.
Where will the money go?
While we don't know where the 2.9 billion pounds will go, we can speculate. The government could invest the money anywhere, but they will likely spend at least some of it building the U.K.'s artillery stockpiles. As a result of the U.K.'s support of Ukraine, subsequent governments since 2022 have emptied the military's cupboards. Next, the MOD could spend some money to improve the infrastructure of the military's bases nationwide.
Value for money is a key concern for the new government, as seen in John Healey's creation of the National Armaments Director role. Therefore, any investment decision is likely to be carefully considered before the money is spent.
