The U.S. is tweaking its nuclear deterrence strategy after Russia fired a new experimental nuclear-capable ballistic missile into Ukraine. Russia itself launched the missile after the Americans and the British allowed Ukraine to strike into Russia with long-range weapons. So far, the United States has avoided talk of nuclear escalation thus leaving the floor to Russia who consistently talks of it when Ukraine is afforded a new privilege or capability.

Is it time for the U.S. to play ball?

Well, maybe but officials in government, like Richard C. Johnson, realise the importance of nuclear weapons when it comes to crafting strategy. Mr. Johnson is the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Policy and in an article published by the U.S. Department of the Defense he said “We are now in a world where we're facing multiple nuclear competitors, multiple states that are growing, diversifying and modernizing their nuclear arsenals and also, unfortunately, prioritizing the role that nuclear weapons play in their national security strategies,"

They say acknowledgement is the first step towards solving a problem, let’s see what comes next.
