The U.S. Department of Defence (DoD) has agreed a new open-ended contract to supply troops with Video Data Link (VDL) technology which could be worth up to $182 million to defence firm L3Harris.

As per a press statement on the contractor’s website posted on Monday, the company has secured an Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) deal vias the U.S. Air Force to supply a range of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) communications equipment including its ROVER 6S and Tactical Network ROVER (TNR) 2 wideband handheld transceivers.

This latest deal is the third consecutive, five-year VDL IDIQ L3Harris has received under the U.S. DoD’s VDL III programme.

The firm’s press release said the ROVER 6S afforded soldiers real-time, full-motion video and other data where eyes-on-target are needed, while the TNR 2 handheld transceiver could provide a multi-megabit, bi-directional data link capability to dismounted ground combat troops.

President of Broadband Communications Systems at L3Harris Lauren Barnes commented: “Coordinating with the Air Force as partners to leverage existing tools and authorities drives greater value for domestic and international customers on an exponential scale.”
