German defence giant Rheinmetall has announced it has finished development of a new enhanced armour-piercing shell about to be tested by the Bundeswehr and the British Army.

As per a press statement released this week by the firm, it has been commissioned by the two forces to supply samples of the new KE2020Neo or eKE (enhanced Kinetic Energy) 120mm shells.

The new munition incorporates a newly designed high-strength tungsten element with the ability to penetrate targets sporting even state-of-the-art protection technologies.

The 120mm shells can be fired from a variety of Main Battle Tanks operated by NATO forces including the Leopard 2 in use with the Bundeswehr, and the M1 Abrams used by the U.S. Army.

Britain's new Challenger 3 tank currently being produced by RBSL also features a 120mm smoothbore turret which will be compatible with the new eKe ammunition.
