Ready, Eim, Fire! Spain Spends Big On Mortar Systems
The Spanish Armed Forces have agreed to buy €150 million-worth of Eimos mortar systems from German defence giant Rheinmetall.
The Spanish government has signed a contract with Rheinmetall subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions to supply it with 84 of the platform-agnostic systems for its Army, Navy and Air Force.
As per a Rheinmetall press statement the €150m deal includes maintenance and training components, and the 81mm mortars will be delivered across three years from the end of 2024 to the close of 2027.
Back in 2017 the Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD) launched its UTEX programme investigating future tactical light vehicles; the Eimos system can be fitted on these prototypes.
The firm's statement claimed the new deal "underscores Rheinmetall's reliability as a partner of the Spanish Army in the supply of key products" and "highlights Rheinmetall's leading role in the field of weapons and ammunition technology."
