Swedish defence firm Saab has just launched a new compact passive sensor designed for tactical reconnaissance of communication signals.

The company unveiled the newest addition to its Sirius tactical Electronic Warfare (EW) sensor family, the Sirius Compact L20C, at an event in Nuremberg, Germany. The Communications–Electronic Support Measures (C-ESM) sensor can detect, classify, localise and track a range of communication signals including enemy troops' radios or drone signals.

As per the firm's press statement, the modern and NATO-compatible system offers maximum operational flexibility: it can operate remotely, is easy to use and difficult to detect, boasts high bearing accuracy and state-of-the-art signal processing for robust signal detection, and supports the electromagnetic situation picture (Recognised Electromagnetic Picture).

Its diminutive size and NATO-compatible interfaces facilitate a wide range of deployment scenarios, including soldier-borne transport, use on highly mobile light vehicles, and tool-free mast installation. Its software is designed to seamlessly integrate with a wide range of Command and Control (C2) systems.

Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s surveillance division, described the L20C as a "milestone" product and added: “Our customers will benefit from L20C to always stay ahead of the threats through its capability to track enemy communication signals. In combination with Sirius Compact L20R, it provides users with vital information simultaneously to deliver situational awareness that is of the highest relevance on today’s battlefield.”
