Site Selected For Norwegian Military Radar Station
Defence materiel agency Forsvarsmateriell has selected the optimum site in eastern Norway for part of a new national military radar system.
Sirikjerke in Øvre Eiker — a mountain peak roughly 30 miles west of Oslo — has been selected as the location for one of five new radar stations, one of a network of 11 such outposts for military airspace surveillance. The remaining six are to be installed at existing radar facilities.
The radar site at Sirikjerke will consist of a building with a radar dome and an access road. The facility is planned to be set back from the summit.
As per a recent press statement on the Forsvarsmateriell website, new sites have been selected on a range of criteria to ensure the widest possible coverage can be achieved with a limited number of installations, taking into account any specific technical challenges posed by potential locations.
Norway’s Parliament, the Storting, gave the green light for the radar upgrade back in 2019; the work will be carried out by Forsvarsbygg, the Norwegian Defence Estate Agency.
