Commander Antonio Strina

Commander STRINA was born in Carrara on April 22nd, 1976. After the Scientific High School in the Naval College F.Morosini in Venice, he attended the Italian Naval Academy from 1997 to 2002, graduating with a master degree in Political Science. After graduation, he was selected as naval aviator and trained with the US Navy flight schools in Florida and Texas from 2002 and 2004 earning both airplane and helicopter wings. Back to Italy, he was assigned to the 5th Helicopter Squadron stationed in Luni (SP) where he transitioned to the Augusta Bell AB-212 and trained in Anti Submarine Warfare Operation. From 2005 to 2011 he served in the 5th Helicopter Squadron as Equipment and Weapon section leader and Head of the Anti Submarine Warfare Department. During this period, in the rank of Lieutenant, he was deployed once in Afghanistan with “ISAF” and took part in several Operations on board of Italian ships (Enduring Freedom, UNIFIL, Ocean Shield and “Unified Protector” in 2011 during the Libyan crisis). In 2011 he attended the Junior Staff Officer Course at the Italian Naval Staff College in Venice. In 2012 he commanded the Transport ship ITS Gorgona. From 2012 to 2015 he was assigned to the Italian Navy General Staff in the Naval Aviation Department in Rome to serve as Regulation and Standardization Office. From 2015 to 2019 he was assigned to the NATO Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway, where he served as a Staff Officer Joint Planning and lead as Chief Scenario major NATO exercises. From September 2019 to September 2020 he was assigned to the Italian Navy Training Vessel Amerigo Vespucci as Executive Officer. From September 2020 to September 2021 he was the Commanding Officer of Italian Navy Training Vessel PALINURO. From September 2021 to September 2023 he was the Commanding Officer of the ITA Navy 1st AW-101” merlin” Helicopter Squadron, operating in support to amphibious and special operations and he trained in Special Operations air support, including tactical transport, low level and Night Vision Goggle (NVG) flights. From September 2023 he is assigned to the Secretariat General of Defence / National Armaments Directorate as Section leader of the Rotary Wing Section of the Aeronautical Programs Office. He serves as the project manager for several key defense acquisition research and development programs, including ENGRT, NGRC, MUSHER, MQ-9B STOL, and NH-90.
