Captain Artur Jorge Abreu Varanda is a member of the Core Project Team of the Portuguese Army “Remote and Autonomous Systems” program. An Artillery Officer by training, he is a graduate of the Portuguese Military Academy and holds a Master’s in Geographic Information Systems and Science from the Nova University of Lisbon, where he is also an invited lecturer at the Bachelor’s degree in Data Science program. His current posting is the Army Experimentation and Technological Modernization Centre, which immediately followed a command tour as the Commanding Officer of a Ground-Based Air Defence battery. Besides the “Remote and Autonomous Systems” program, he is also member of the Core Project Teams for the Ground-Based Air Defence and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems programs, and, as a researcher, he is a member of a Defence project to develop an open-source monitoring and analysis system to support situational awareness.
