Brigadier Jason Ainley began his military career as a musician in the Royal Armoured Corps, but soon discovered a love for soldiering that took him, via a degree in Electronic Systems Engineering, to a commission in the Royal Engineers in 1998.
Early Regimental Duty saw operational service in Northern Ireland, Afghanistan and Iraq. Internationally he served as a liaison officer with the US Army and on exchange with the Australian Defence Force. He commanded 73 Armoured Engineer Squadron, including in Afghanistan, and 21 Engineer Regiment, including in command of the UK’s first Task Force to deploy in support of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.
He has attended the Advanced Command and Staff Course and the Royal College of Defence Studies. He has served in staff posts in the Army Personnel Centre, Permanent Joint Headquarters and MOD. His most recent posts include Deputy Chief of Staff of the 1st (United Kingdom) Division, Chief of Staff of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Group, and Brigadier General Staff in the Army Headquarters. He became Chief Engineer and Civil Military Cooperation within the Headquarters of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps in January 2025.
