Personal Profile

Brigadier Jamie Stuart was educated at Dollar Academy and Edinburgh University before commissioning into the Royal Engineers in 2000. His early career was spent mainly at Regimental Duty, serving as a Troop Commander and Operations Officer in The Queen’s Gurkha Engineers’; as a Battle Group Engineer supporting an armoured battlegroup; and as Regimental Operations Officer for a close support engineer regiment. This included three operational deployments to Iraq, a tour with the United Nations in Cyprus, as well as training in Nepal, Canada, Belize and Germany. Promotion to Major and staff training, which included the Battlespace Technology Course, was followed by an initial staff appointment in the Ministry of Defence developing and delivering new capabilities. His subsequent time as Officer Commanding 8 Armoured Engineer Squadron included deploying the squadron to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 16. He then moved back to staff, working in the J3 operations branch of the Permanent Joint Headquarters, undertaking multiple global deployments to operational theatres including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Ukraine, Bosnia, Nigeria and the Middle East. A year instructing on the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) was followed by promotion to Lieutenant Colonel and attendance on the Advanced Command and Staff Course. He subsequently took up appointment as the lead staff officer for Strategy in the Army Headquarters. This was followed by command of 39 Engineer Regiment, deploying the Regiment as the commander of the UK Task Force supporting the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and on multiple UK Resilience Operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On promotion to Colonel he assumed the post of DACOS Military and Strategic Plans in HQ Field Army responsible for military strategic plans, programming, structural organisation and change. Most recently he has undertaken the role of Assistant Head of Strategy and Force Design in Army Futures; developing, evidencing and implementing the future force design for the Army, supporting Defence Force Development and the Army’s input into the Strategic Defence Review. Following the Higher Command and Staff Course, he now commands 8 Engineer Brigade. Married to Fliss, they have two children Isla and Jack. In his spare time, which with a young family is very limited, he pretty much enjoys any outdoor sport but in particular cycling, kayaking, sailing and hill walking
