Rheinmetall has partnered with Australian firm Praetorian Aeronautics to deliver AERIE, a containerised counter-uncrewed aircraft system (C-UAS) built to defeat low-cost drone threats, according to Rheinmetall.
The two companies took the prototype from concept to demonstrator in 12 months under an Australian collaborative research and development partnership. The timeline reflects a shared emphasis on rapid development as drone threats evolve.
A Mobile, Interceptor-Agnostic Launcher
AERIE stands for Autonomous-Engagement-Rapid-Interceptor-Effector. The system is self-sustained and can launch different types of interceptor. It fits inside a 20ft ISO shipping container, which makes it highly mobile, and holds more than 20 interceptors.
Crews can deploy the launcher quickly and reload it in the field. Rheinmetall and Praetorian Aeronautics position it as a low-cost answer to the growing availability of cheap uncrewed aerial systems.
Australian-Designed Components
The demonstrator integrates two systems designed and developed in Australia. Praetorian Aeronautics’ Arrow Interceptor is an autonomous, high-speed, low-cost weapon. It neutralises multiple uncrewed threat types beyond visual range through kinetic impact. The Hadrian Command and Control (C2) system uses artificial intelligence to manage autonomous effectors across air, land and maritime domains.
Industry Perspectives
Nathan Poyner, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia, said the work reflects the company’s support for Australian sovereign capability. He said it combines “Australian ingenuity” with global air defence engineering and manufacturing expertise.
Praetorian Aeronautics CEO Brett Hill said his company has developed advanced systems for more than three years. He said the partnership pairs Praetorian’s C2 system and interceptor with Rheinmetall’s engineering and production capability. “Together, we have delivered an Australian air defence solution for emerging global threats,” he said.
AERIE moves to full operator demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2026.
