Bas van den Berg was born in Stein on the 3rd of September 1966. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy in 1991 and was posted to 12 Armoured Engineer Company as a Lieutenant and in 1993 he became Logistics Officer of 13 Armoured Engineer Company. In 1995, he was appointed as Chief Instructionplatoon at the School for Mines and Explosives and promoted to Captain. During this posting he deployed to Angola as demining instructor within UNAVEM III.

His next job was Operations Officer at 11 Armoured Engineer Battalion and in 2000 he deployed to Kosovo with the Netherlands Engineer Relief Battalion.Promoted to Major in 2001 he took command over 111 Armoured Engineer Company. And in 2004 he started as Project Manager Real Estate at Central Staff.

After completing the Netherlands Command and General Staff Officers Course in 2008, he served as Staff Officer Plans Integration in the Central Staff and after being promoted to LtCol he became Chief Financial Officer of the Training Command and Staff Officer in the Army Staff. In 2014, he took over command of 41 Armoured Engineer Battalion and in 2017 he deployed to Afghanistan as Special Advisor of the Senior Civilian Representative in Kabul.

Promoted to Colonel he worked in the Directorate of Finance and Control in the Central Staff and in the Defence Materiel Organisation. In January 2023 he assumed Command of the Engineer School and from this position he is also Regimental Commander and Chief Engineer of the Netherlands Armed Forces.

Bas van den Berg lives in Zwolle with his wife Elke. They have three children, Bram (1997), Kim (1999) and Sander (2002).
