Hundreds of British-made air defence missiles have been delivered to Ukraine five months ahead of schedule, marking a significant boost to Kyiv’s defences as the UK deepens industrial cooperation with its wartime ally, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The accelerated delivery coincided with a major UK trade delegation to Kyiv led by Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard, who reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to supporting Ukraine “for as long as it takes” against Russia’s ongoing invasion.

Early Delivery Strengthens Ukraine’s Air Defence

The missiles—Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM), produced by Thales in Belfast—have played a key role in protecting Ukrainian airspace since 2022. The new batch, supplied under the UK’s gifting programme, arrived months ahead of schedule, underscoring the pace of the UK’s industrial support for Ukraine’s war effort.

Thales is now entering the next phase of a £1.6 billion partnership with Ukrainian defence firms, aimed at further integrating the missiles into Ukraine’s air defence network and strengthening its sovereign manufacturing capacity. The ongoing work supports 200 new jobs and sustains an additional 700 positions across the UK defence supply chain.

“This year alone, we are spending £4.5 billion on military support for Ukraine—more than ever before,” Pollard said during the visit. “Driving industrial partnerships is essential so that we can learn from each other’s expertise and build the industrial base we need to defend the UK, deter our adversaries, and support Ukraine.”

The missile delivery comes as the UK spearheads a growing defence industry partnership with Ukraine. Businesses from across NATO participated in Ukraine’s International Defence Industry Conference in Kyiv, highlighting a united front among allies to bolster Ukraine’s long-term defence resilience.

Kevin Craven, Chief Executive of ADS—the UK trade association for aerospace, defence, and security industries—said the trade mission represented “the most multinational industrial delegation to Kyiv of its kind.” He emphasised the need to expand European industrial capacity amid Russia’s intensifying campaign.

“The UK’s defence industry stands united in increasing production, developing new capabilities, and building a resilient industrial ecosystem that endures against the most trying of circumstances,” Craven said.

New Investments and Joint Programmes

The strengthened cooperation has already yielded tangible results. Ukraine’s largest drone manufacturer, Ukrspecsystems, announced a £200 million investment to establish two production facilities in Britain, creating 500 skilled jobs. The facilities will focus on joint development and manufacturing of advanced drone technologies.

This initiative forms part of Programme LYRA, a new technology-sharing framework enabling joint production of military equipment between the UK and Ukraine. One of its flagship projects, Project OCTOPUS, involves the development of a next-generation air defence interceptor drone—designed to counter the frequent barrages of one-way attack drones launched by Russia.

These drones, according to the UK Ministry of Defence, are significantly cheaper than traditional missiles and can be mass-produced at scale to reinforce Ukraine’s layered air defence.

Building a Long-Term Partnership

As part of the broader UK–Ukraine 100-Year Partnership, UK Defence Exports has launched a new guide, Working with Ukraine’s Defence Sector, to help small and medium-sized British firms engage with Ukrainian defence procurement and partnership opportunities.

Trade missions between the two countries have already resulted in over 30 industrial partnerships, generating jobs and strengthening bilateral security ties.

With the war now well into its third year, the UK’s accelerated missile deliveries and expanding industrial cooperation signal a concerted effort not only to sustain Ukraine’s defence but also to build the foundations for its long-term self-reliance.
