Sweden’s defence procurement agency has handed BAE Systems Bofors a major contract for its truck-mounted 40mm gun system, as Nordic nations push hard to close gaps in short-range air defence.

BAE Systems has won a $180 million contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for its TRIDON Mk2 anti-aircraft system. It is the latest in a string of Scandinavian orders for the platform as regional demand for deployable air defence accelerates.

The deal was placed with BAE Systems Bofors and covers the truck-mounted 40mm system built to engage a wide range of aerial threats, from drones and cruise missiles to manned aircraft.

Dual-Role Capability

The TRIDON Mk2 is not purely an air defence tool. The system can also engage ground targets, including armoured vehicles, giving commanders a single platform capable of protecting both military forces and civilian infrastructure from multiple threat types simultaneously.

Its multi-target capability allows it to track and engage several threats at once. That requirement has risen sharply in priority since drone-heavy conflicts demonstrated the limitations of older, single-engagement systems.

Lena Gillström, president of BAE Systems Bofors, said the company was “more committed than ever” to protecting customers from evolving aerial threats. According to BAE Systems, she added the TRIDON Mk2 had been purpose-built for contemporary warfare, with continued development planned to meet emerging challenges.

Ukraine Donation Sets the Scene

The FMV’s latest contract is not its first TRIDON Mk2 deal. In February, the agency procured systems on behalf of both Sweden and Denmark for donation to Ukraine, as part of a wider effort to reinforce Kyiv’s battered air defences.

Committing a platform to an active conflict zone carries implicit endorsement of its operational credibility. That earlier procurement has given the TRIDON Mk2 programme significant momentum.
