Saab UK has delivered Giraffe 1X radar systems to the Royal Air Force, strengthening Britain’s defences against uncrewed aerial systems, according to Saab.
Meeting an Urgent Operational Need
The delivery responds to a direct operational requirement from the RAF. It follows years of collaboration between the service and Saab, building on prior capability upgrades. That partnership let both organisations move quickly against a rising counter-drone threat.
Saab mobilised its global manufacturing network at short notice. The company leaned on its UK production and support base to speed delivery, meeting an urgent MOD contract.
Industry and Military Cooperation
Andy Fraser, Group Managing Director at Saab UK, credited teams across the company’s UK operations and wider business for the delivery. He said it demonstrates Saab’s industrial footprint in Britain.
A Royal Air Force spokesperson said Saab’s ability to scale up global production quickly impressed the service. The equipment reduces risk to personnel from drone attacks, the spokesperson added, praising the collaborative work with the MOD team.
Part of a Wider Counter-Drone Architecture
The Giraffe 1X radars now form part of the RAF’s broader counter-drone system, supporting detection, tracking and engagement of aerial threats. They complement the RAF Regiment’s existing counter-UAS role, which includes protecting personnel and facilities in the Middle East.
The delivery underscores growing UK investment in force protection technology. It also reflects the increasing urgency defence planners place on countering drones, a threat that has escalated sharply across recent conflicts, from Ukraine to the Middle East.
