UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) has announced five core themes to guide its work with industry, as per a recent press statement. The themes are Autonomy, Decision Advantage, Logistics and Support, Effects, and Protection.
UKDI serves as the Ministry of Defence’s unified innovation team. It sits within the National Armaments Director (NAD) Group and holds a ringfenced annual budget of at least £400 million. The organisation aims to help UK companies develop and scale prototypes faster.
The five themes create a framework linking innovation to defence priorities. Autonomy covers trusted uncrewed systems across land, sea, air, and space. Decision Advantage focuses on turning data into actionable insights through AI and secure communications. Logistics and Support targets medical, energy, and maintenance innovations that sustain personnel in harsh environments. Effects addresses both precision systems and low-cost technologies deployable at scale. Protection concerns safeguarding people and assets through better detection and counter-drone systems.
Rupert Pearce, National Armaments Director, commented: the confirmed themes mark an important step for UKDI as it becomes Defence’s powerful new innovation team, supporting economic growth alongside battle-ready capabilities.
John Cunningham, Director of Innovation at UKDI, added: the organisation will work closely with industry to ensure the Armed Forces receive the technology they need.
The themes are designed to help small businesses and start-ups understand how to collaborate with defence. Further details on funding opportunities appear on the UKDI Live page on GOV.UK, according to the statement.
