Rheinmetall and Nooteboom Join Forces to Meet Surging European Demand for Military Heavy Equipment Trailers

German defence giant Rheinmetall and Dutch transport specialist Nooteboom Trailers B.V. have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop, produce, and market military Heavy Equipment Trailer (HET) systems, targeting a fast-growing segment of the European defence market.

A Partnership Driven by Rearmament

Europe’s accelerating rearmament drive sits squarely behind the deal. NATO nations are procuring battle tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and self-propelled howitzers at scale. That surge in heavy armour demands a parallel investment in the logistics infrastructure to move it. Military off-road heavy transport solutions are in significantly higher demand across the continent, and both companies see a clear commercial and strategic opportunity.

The agreement covers the full product lifecycle — from joint development and industrialisation through to international marketing and sales.

Complementary Expertise

The partnership rests on what both parties describe as a complementary skills base. Nooteboom, founded in 1881 and headquartered in Wijchen, Netherlands, brings more than a century of specialist transport engineering. The family-owned company — now in its fifth generation — designs and produces trailers capable of carrying payloads up to 200 tonnes. It holds numerous patents and operates two production facilities backed by an extensive European sales network.

Rheinmetall contributes a very different set of capabilities. The Düsseldorf-based defence group — founded in 1889 and listed on Germany’s DAX 40 since 2023 — brings military vehicle manufacturing expertise, cost-efficient industrial capacity, and established international market access. The company employs around 33,000 people across approximately 180 global sites and reported sales of €9.9 billion in its 2025 financial year.

An Integrated HET System

The joint product combines Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles’ highly mobile tractor units with a Nooteboom trailer system. The resulting integrated HET solution is designed to transport heavy tracked and wheeled vehicles — including armoured recovery vehicles and armoured engineer platforms — across demanding operational terrain.

The vertical integration of tractor and trailer under a single offering gives Rheinmetall a more complete answer to military mobility tenders, while Nooteboom gains direct access to defence procurement channels it could not easily reach alone.

Industry Implications

The deal reflects a broader consolidation trend in European defence logistics. As NATO members expand their armoured fleets, the supply chain supporting battlefield mobility has become a procurement priority in its own right. Partnerships like this — combining established civil engineering expertise with defence industry reach — are likely to become more common as governments seek to close capability gaps quickly.

According to both companies, the collaboration will strengthen their competitive positions in military mobility and contribute to a more resilient European defence industrial base.
