Lockheed Martin’s Vertical-Launch JAGM Brings New Dimension to Counter-Drone Defence

Lockheed Martin has validated a new vertical-launch configuration for its Joint Air-to-Ground Missile, opening a potentially significant new front in layered counter-drone defence across land, maritime, and expeditionary environments.

At China Lake, California, on 15 January 2026, Lockheed Martin conducted the first successful 90-degree launch of a JAGM from its JAGM Quad Launcher — known as the JQL — with the missile demonstrating its ability to neutralise an unmanned aerial system (UAS) threat. Lockheed Martin The demonstration marks a pivotal step in repositioning a well-established air-to-ground munition as a multi-domain counter-UAS effector.

From Air-to-Ground to All-Domain

Lockheed Martin says the test validated full vertical-launch operation for JAGM across multiple platform types, including surface-combatant vessels, enabling a 360-degree engagement envelope. Military Embedded Systems That capability matters enormously in contested environments, where a fixed forward firing arc can leave critical blind spots.

The JQL features a pivot fixture enabling JAGMs to be loaded and launched at angled or vertical orientations, with a marinised design optimised for harsh maritime environments. Lockheed Martin The system’s four independent, modular composite canisters allow individual cells to be rapidly reloaded — a critical advantage for naval operators requiring sustained defensive fire.

The JQL was mounted on a Richard Childress Racing 6×6 “Mothership” vehicle during the demonstration, illustrating the launcher’s flexibility across ground vehicle platforms. Military Embedded Systems According to Lockheed Martin, this “launch-anywhere” capability positions JAGM as a rapid-reaction, network-centric effector deployable wherever high-value assets require protection.

A Plug-and-Play Answer to Drone Threats

The broader strategic context is hard to ignore. Drone threats to military bases, naval vessels, and expeditionary forces have intensified sharply in recent years — from contested airspace over Ukraine to Red Sea shipping lanes targeted by Houthi UAS strikes. Traditional counter-UAS solutions, including electronic warfare, often struggle against more sophisticated or kinetic threats.

The JQL offers a reloadable, deep-magazine counter-UAS solution aimed at higher-end UAS threats that electronic warfare may not succeed in defeating. Naval News Lockheed positions JAGM’s modular architecture as a low-cost, high-reliability option that integrates into existing layered-defence frameworks without requiring bespoke infrastructure.

JAGM’s dual-mode seeker — combining semi-active laser guidance with millimeter-wave sensing — underpins its precision against moving targets. Military Embedded Systems Lockheed Martin also intends the JAGM/JQL integration to support counter-uncrewed threats beyond aerial targets, including unmanned surface vehicles, enabling employment across air, land, and sea environments. Industry and Naval Ambitions

The JQL has been pitched as a possible launch system for U.S. Navy Mark VI Patrol Boats, future unmanned surface vessels, and Joint Light Tactical Vehicles. Naval News Lockheed executives say they are optimistic the JQL will open new sales in the rapidly growing counter-drone market, particularly for naval forces. Breaking Defense

Casey Walsh, program management director for Lockheed Martin Multi-Domain Missile Systems, said the demonstration confirms JAGM can be rapidly deployed across a variety of scenarios. Walsh described the milestone as validating “a unified missile architecture that seamlessly operates across air, land and sea domains, enhancing survivability and flexibility for future combat operations.” Lockheed Martin

Further live-fire events are planned in the coming months, including a proof-of-concept integration with Saildrone to showcase a multi-mission maritime solution. Lockheed Martin With drone threats proliferating across every operational domain, the vertical-launch JAGM looks set to attract serious attention from defence planners worldwide.
