Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has placed a call-off order with Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH for additional Infantry Soldier of the Future Enhanced System (IdZ-ES) platforms. The order falls under an existing framework agreement and covers both the modernisation of current systems and the delivery of 237 new platoon systems worth €1.04bn gross.

Deliveries are scheduled between November 2027 and December 2029. Once fulfilled, the Bundeswehr will operate 353 platoon systems in total, comprising more than 12,000 individual equipment sets. Awarded in April, the contract will be booked in the second quarter of 2026.

Parliamentary Backing

The German Bundestag approved €1.3bn for the IdZ-ES programme just days ago, signalling strong political support for the project. That funding envelope exceeds the current contract value, and according to Rheinmetall, further call-off orders are expected.

The current award draws from a broader framework contract signed in February 2025, the largest of its kind for both Rheinmetall and BAAINBw. That agreement, worth up to €3.1bn gross and running until the end of 2030, initially included a firm order covering the modernisation of 68 existing systems and the procurement of 24 new platoon systems, valued at approximately €417m gross.

What Each Platoon System Includes

Each platoon system centres on 35 individual soldier systems alongside a suite of peripheral components including advanced IT equipment, optics, optronics, military clothing, personal protection and load-carrying equipment. Rheinmetall acts as general contractor, managing a supply chain of more than 30 subcontractors across the programme.

Digital Integration

The modernised design status strips out all technically obsolete components and introduces updated communication and data-exchange capabilities compatible with multiple vehicle platforms. Upgraded hardware connects each soldier system through those vehicle platforms into the Bundeswehr’s Digitisation of Land-based Operations (D-LBO) information and communications network. The revised architecture also establishes the conditions for direct soldier-to-D-LBO connectivity, a capability with significant implications for future networked operations.

Digital soldier systems are becoming central to land warfare doctrine. Connecting dismounted infantry directly into a broader digital battlespace allows commanders to share situational awareness and coordinate fires and manoeuvre in near real time. The IdZ-ES expansion positions the Bundeswehr to meet that requirement at scale.

Industry Significance

The contract reinforces Rheinmetall’s standing as Germany’s primary land systems integrator. With parliamentary funding already approved beyond the current order value, the programme looks set to generate further contract activity before the framework expires at the end of the decade.
