First Flight Marks Milestone for Autonomous Propulsion
Northrop Grumman has launched flight testing of its XRQ-73 uncrewed aircraft at Edwards Air Force Base, California, advancing hybrid-electric propulsion for military autonomous systems.
The aircraft forms the centrepiece of DARPA’s Series Hybrid Electric Propulsion AiRcraft Demonstration — SHEPARD — a programme designed to develop next-generation propulsion for lightweight autonomous platforms.
Hybrid-Electric System Promises Operational Advantages
The XRQ-73 integrates a hybrid-electric system combining fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and expanded operational flexibility. Northrop Grumman says the configuration opens new mission possibilities and supports the development of future aircraft designs.
DARPA’s programme targets a recognised capability gap: lightweight autonomous aircraft that can operate efficiently without the limitations of purely fuel-based or all-electric systems. Hybrid propulsion addresses both endurance and emissions concerns — factors of growing importance as defence forces seek to reduce logistical footprints.
