L3Harris Technologies has secured a three-year contract worth up to $60 million to advance a long-range, maneuverable interceptor for the U.S. Army, the company announced.
The award falls under the Xtended Range Counter-sUAS Missile program, run by the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center. The interceptor targets small and medium-size unmanned aircraft systems, as well as traditional Short Range Air Defense threats.
Move to Phase Two
L3Harris has advanced to the program’s second phase, which centres on flight performance testing. The company will test a fully integrated interceptor. According to L3Harris, the design offers greater range, speed and operational flexibility than systems now in service.
Technology and Integration
The interceptor combines propulsion, guidance and advanced manufacturing expertise. “This design combines innovative propulsion with advanced seeker technologies,” said Scott Alexander, President of Propulsion Systems, Missile Solutions at L3Harris. He described the system as modular, cost-effective and deployable from existing launch platforms.
L3Harris is also adapting its counter-sUAS solution to work with current U.S. military platforms. The aim is rapid integration into existing operational architectures. The company says its approach to air-breathing ramjet engines improves fuel efficiency and extends engagement range.
