L3Harris Technologies has begun delivering its VAMPIRE counter-unmanned systems to the US Army, giving soldiers a new layer of protection against hostile drones, according to L3Harris.

The first units arrived within two months of the Army’s $106 million order. The quick turnaround reflects the Army’s push to field counter-drone capability at pace.

A self-contained weapons solution

VAMPIRE is a self-contained system that combines advanced reconnaissance with precision strike capability. It targets drones and other remotely piloted aircraft.

Armed forces have already used the technology extensively in European combat operations. According to L3Harris, VAMPIRE has logged more than 350,000 operational hours since 2023. That record gives the US Army a system with proven battlefield experience.

Industry and Army perspective

Chris Aebli, President of Communications & Spectrum Dominance at L3Harris, said the company has worked alongside the Army from the start to field the systems quickly. “U.S. armed forces are now equipped to reliably defend personnel and vital assets against drone threats,” he said.

Expanding production

L3Harris opened a dedicated VAMPIRE production facility in Huntsville, Alabama, earlier this year. The company expects domestic and global demand for counter-drone capability to grow, and it has since increased production at the site.
