The Wide Wet Gap Crossing (WWGC) Programme has passed its Preliminary Design Review, allowing detailed design work to start on a new bridging and ferrying capability for Germany and the United Kingdom.
According to OCCAR, the review took place in Bonn on 29 September 2026. Representatives from both Participating States and industry attended. They assessed the maturity of the system design and agreed on the next steps.
Path to Critical Design Review
The meeting concluded that detailed design activities could begin. That work will support progress towards the Critical Design Review (CDR), the next major milestone for the programme.
OCCAR said the review gave confidence in the programme’s technical direction. It also set what the organisation described as a strong foundation for the next phase of development.
Mobility and Interoperability
The WWGC Programme aims to deliver a next-generation bridging and ferrying capability. Military planners rely on such systems to move forces across rivers and other water obstacles. The programme is intended to improve military mobility and interoperability between German and British forces, building on long-standing defence cooperation between the two nations.
OCCAR manages the programme on behalf of both governments. The organisation provides the framework for multinational cooperation, bringing Participating States and industry together to support delivery.
The completion of the review keeps the programme moving towards its next design milestone.
