Thales and ArianeGroup have successfully completed the first firing of the FLP-t 150 ballistic munition, marking a significant milestone in France’s drive to develop sovereign, long-range ground strike capabilities.

The test took place on 5 May 2026 at the Île du Levant facility, with support from France’s Directorate General of Armament Missile Testing (DGA EM), according to Thales.

The FLP-t 150 delivers an operational range exceeding 150 kilometres. Its rear-mounted rudder control system enables precise terminal manoeuvres, even in GNSS-jammed environments — a critical capability in contested modern battlespaces.

Developed to replace France’s existing Unitary Rocket Launchers (LRU), the munition targets high-intensity combat requirements. Its propulsion, guidance, and control technologies draw directly from ballistic missile engineering. ArianeGroup leads propulsion and the munition control system; Thales manages the overall system, ground launcher, and fire control.

The munition pairs with Thales and Soframe’s X-Fire launcher, a mobile, rapidly deployable platform designed for interoperability with both French sovereign and allied munitions. X-Fire integrates natively into the ATLAS artillery fire control chain and is built to accommodate longer-range ballistic missiles for future deep strike roles. Its first demonstration firings are scheduled before the end of May 2026.

The system is entirely French-designed and manufactured, with production sites across Cholet, Elancourt, Gennevilliers, Valence, and Bordeaux, among others.

“This launch marks a decisive step for long-range ground strikes,” said Hervé Dammann, Executive Vice President of Land and Air Systems at Thales, highlighting the system’s sovereignty, versatility, and rapid production capacity.

Vincent Pery, Director of Defence Programs at ArianeGroup, said the programme opens the path toward a conventional ballistic missile capability spanning tactical, operational, and strategic requirements.
