Anduril Unveils Thunder, an Autonomous Attack Helicopter for Contested Airspace

Anduril has revealed Thunder, a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to team with crewed aircraft in high-threat environments, according to a recent press statement from the company.

Countering a Deadlier Battlefield

Drones, loitering munitions and persistent surveillance have made low-altitude airspace increasingly lethal for attack helicopters and their crews. Anduril says Thunder addresses this shift by pairing autonomy with survivability, letting formations strike harder while keeping pilots further from danger.

Tiltrotor Design for Extended Reach

Thunder uses a tiltrotor configuration, combining vertical takeoff with efficient wingborne cruise. This allows runway-independent operations from remote locations without the range limits of conventional rotorcraft. Developed alongside Archer Aviation, the aircraft draws on commercial electric propulsion technology. Its hybrid-electric powertrain and variable-speed rotors extend range while reducing noise during low-altitude approaches. Thunder can self-deploy globally or ship inside a standard container by air, road, rail or sea.

Payload Flexibility and Formation Autonomy

Modular bays let Thunder carry precision missiles, rockets, electronic warfare systems or counter-drone effectors, adapting to different missions. Anduril notes that teaming three Thunder aircraft with each Apache could triple available munitions without adding risk to pilots. The company’s Lattice software manages formation flying, threat detection and coordination with crewed platforms, functioning even when GPS and communications are degraded.

Development Timeline

Anduril has already flown full-scale surrogate aircraft and plans Thunder’s first flight for 2027, positioning the platform as a response to the growing lethality of near-surface combat.
