BAE Systems unveils next-generation modular warhead for drones and missiles

BAE Systems has unveiled BlackThorn, a new multi-role modular warhead built for autonomous platforms, one-way effectors, counter-drone systems, missiles and uncrewed ground vehicles, as per a recent press statement.

The warhead addresses a growing demand for munitions that integrate easily across platforms while remaining cheap and quick to manufacture at scale. Modern conflicts increasingly rely on attritable, mass-produced systems, and BlackThorn is designed to meet that shift.

Frankenburg Technologies has selected BlackThorn as the first next-generation warhead for its Mark I short-range air defence missile. The decision follows a collaboration agreement the two companies signed earlier this year.

Scott Jamieson, Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Maritime and Land Defence Solutions, commented: “BlackThorn combines decades of expertise in warhead design, energetic materials and fuzing with our proven experience in delivering high-volume munitions to demonstrate a new way of thinking about payloads for a range of platforms that meet the demands of the modern battlefield.”

He added: “This innovation provides an advanced, affordable solution that meets the evolving needs of our customers and delivers multi-role warheads for the next generation of attritable platforms, missiles, autonomous platforms and counter drone capability at pace to stay ahead of emerging threats.”

Dan Hallett, Managing Director of Frankenburg Technologies UK, commented: “Frankenburg was founded to deliver affordable mass at the speed demanded by modern warfare.” He added that the partnership combines British warhead technology with low-cost missile manufacturing to build a scalable interceptor capability, enabling mass deployment at an accessible price point.

BlackThorn’s modular architecture spans 40mm, 70mm and 120mm variants, supporting blast, fragmentation, multi-purpose and anti-armour effects across different platforms without requiring separate weapon systems.

BAE Systems developed the warhead on an accelerated timeline, relying heavily on modelling, simulation and digital engineering, followed by a wide-ranging testing programme to validate performance.
