General Dynamics Land Systems–UK and engineering firm Ricardo have formed a partnership to build a bespoke vehicle for the British Army’s Light Mobility Vehicle Programme, according to General Dynamics Land Systems. The programme sits within the Army’s wider Land Mobility Programme.
A Proven Platform, Militarised
The companies built their design on the Ford Ranger, a truck with a five-star NCAP safety rating. Engineers adapted the 2025 Ford Ranger Super Duty, preserving its class-leading safety credentials. The base vehicle already carries payloads up to 2,000kg. It also offers upgraded powertrain options and advanced trailer technology. The partnership unveiled militarised 4×4 and 6×6 variants at DSEI, London’s biennial defence exhibition.
Meeting MoD Requirements
The vehicle’s appeal to the Ministry of Defence rests on three factors: scalability, durability, and readiness for defence-specific modifications. General Dynamics and Ricardo bring substantial UK manufacturing and engineering capacity to the project. That footprint aligns with Britain’s Land Industrial Strategy, a policy framework promoting domestic defence jobs and supply chains. As Europe’s best-selling pick-up, the Ranger suits commercial-to-military conversion at scale, supporting the strategy’s economic aims alongside its military ones.

Scott Milne, vice president and general manager at General Dynamics Land Systems–UK, said the collaboration pairs the firm’s programme leadership with Ricardo’s engineering expertise on a proven commercial base. He confirmed the work will be delivered from the company’s South Wales facilities, supporting local jobs and manufacturing capability.
Paul Tarry, Ricardo’s head of defence and special vehicles, described the 4×4 and 6×6 conversions as reliable performers in demanding conditions. He said variants spanning single, extended, double-cab and Super Duty configurations are in development, while the base vehicle’s manufacturer warranty remains intact — a detail aimed at reassuring the Army on long-term support costs.
