Australian personnel complete handover of 49 tanks to Kyiv as part of $1.7 billion aid package

Australia has delivered its final batch of M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine, completing a $245 million donation that directly addresses requests from Kyiv for heavy armoured vehicles.

The handover of 12 tanks in December follows an initial delivery of 37 vehicles in July. Australian Defence Force specialists travelled to Poland in late November under Operation Kudu to prepare the final batch for transfer to Ukrainian forces.

Lieutenant Mitchell Walker, a Townsville-based tank troop leader, led maintenance operations on vehicles he trained on at home. Tank number 51 held particular significance for the young officer, who completed his tank officers course on the same vehicle last year.

“I know this tank is going to do its job well for the Ukrainians,” Walker said from Poland, according to official ADF communications.

The donation forms part of more than $1.7 billion in total Australian assistance delivered since Russia’s invasion began. Military aid accounts for over $1.5 billion of that figure.

Complex Logistics Operation

Operation Kudu required tank specialists, logisticians, mechanics and support staff to work in harsh winter conditions preparing the vehicles for combat deployment. Commander Operation Kudu – Europe Colonel James Smith praised the team’s performance under demanding circumstances.

“Tex and his team have done Australia proud,” Smith said, referring to Walker by his nickname. “They have worked in incredibly cold and harsh conditions to bring these vehicles up to scratch and ready for war.”

Walker, who joined the Army at 17 and served with 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment before commissioning through the Australian Defence Force Academy, emphasized the professional development value for junior soldiers participating in the mission.

“It’s been an absolute privilege maintaining these vehicles and handing them over to where they are desperately needed,” he said. The officer described the deployment as beneficial experience for Australian personnel supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russian invasion.

Broader Military Package

The tank delivery coincides with a new $95 million military assistance package announced by the Australian Government in December. The package includes $50 million for NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List initiative, which procures critical military equipment.

An additional $43 million covers ADF materiel including tactical air defence radars, munitions and combat engineering equipment. Australia also contributed $2 million to the Drone Capability Coalition, focused on providing Ukraine with advanced unmanned aerial systems.

The M1A1 Abrams tanks represent Australia’s most significant single military hardware donation to Ukraine. The vehicles will bolster Ukrainian armoured capabilities as fighting continues along multiple front lines.

Walker followed his father into military service. Warrant Officer Craig Walker, now a reservist, joined at 16 and completed his full-time career at the Rotary-wing Aircraft Maintenance School before transitioning to work with Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group.

The operation demonstrates Australia’s sustained commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defence while providing valuable operational experience for ADF personnel in complex logistics and international cooperation.
