The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded British defence firm QinetiQ a £205 million contract to maintain the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon fighter jet fleet over the next five years, securing 250 high-skilled jobs across the country.

The contract extension will provide critical technical, airworthiness and safety expertise for the RAF’s primary air defence platform, according to the MOD. QinetiQ will support operations at multiple sites including Farnborough, MOD Boscombe Down, Malvern, Lincoln, Bristol, RAF Coningsby and Warton.

Backbone of UK Air Defence

Defence Readiness and Industry Minister Luke Pollard described the Typhoon fleet as “the backbone of Britain’s air defence.” The aircraft protect UK airspace continuously while deploying on operations worldwide in support of NATO allies.

Recent Typhoon operations include NATO’s eastern flank patrols through Operation Eastern Sentry and airstrikes against Daesh terrorists in the Middle East. The multi-role fighters operate at twice the speed of sound in demanding conditions, requiring specialist engineering support to maintain operational readiness.

Cutting-Edge Radar Upgrade

QinetiQ’s engineering teams will help the MOD integrate the European Common Radar System (ECRS) Mk2 into the Typhoon fleet. This advanced radar allows aircraft to detect, identify and track multiple targets simultaneously in air and on ground.

The Strategic Defence Review committed to continuing Typhoon upgrades as part of the RAF’s next-generation capabilities. The platform remains central to UK and NATO defence planning for years ahead.

Defence as Economic Driver

The contract demonstrates how defence spending supports UK economic growth, officials said. QinetiQ has delivered Typhoon technical support since the programme’s inception, representing value for money while meeting RAF operational requirements.

“This contract is a testament to our commitment to the government’s defence as an engine for growth agenda,” said Steve Wadey, QinetiQ Group Chief Executive Officer. He emphasized the company’s focus on backing UK businesses, modernizing delivery methods and ensuring armed forces readiness.

The agreement extends the existing Engineering Delivery Partner Partnership Contract between the MOD and the Aurora consortium, with QinetiQ serving as prime contractor.

Jobs Across the Country

The five-year deal will sustain highly-skilled engineering positions at QinetiQ, MOD and RAF facilities spanning Lancashire, Lincolnshire and Hampshire. These roles support aircraft safety and capability whether protecting UK airspace or conducting allied operations.

Last year, Britain secured 20,000 additional jobs through an £8 billion sale of 20 Typhoons to Türkiye in what officials called the largest fighter jet deal in a generation. That export contract also strengthened NATO’s collective security.

The UK government has committed to the largest sustained defence spending increase since the Cold War, targeting 2.6% of GDP from 2027.

Lyndon Hoyle, DE&S Typhoon Team Leader, praised QinetiQ’s track record: “Their work is essential to keeping these aircraft safe and capable, whether protecting UK airspace or supporting operations worldwide alongside our allies.”

The contract ensures the Typhoon fleet continues receiving expert engineering support needed to remain mission-ready as Britain’s primary air defence capability.
