American and Polish troops fired M1A2 Abrams tanks side by side in Poland this month, marking the first joint live-fire demonstration of Warsaw’s newest armor alongside US forces.

Operation Winter Falcon 26, conducted at the Drawsko Combat Training Center on January 13, highlighted how NATO allies are integrating modern battlefield technologies to strengthen defenses along the alliance’s eastern flank.

Soldiers from the US Army’s 3rd Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment joined Polish land forces in the exercise, which combined armored live-fire drills with demonstrations of unmanned aerial systems and counter-drone capabilities, according to US Army reports.

The event marked a milestone for Polish forces, who fired their M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks alongside American crews for the first time. The SEPv3 variant represents the most advanced version of the platform currently in service.

Building Allied Interoperability

Army Col. Matthew Kelley, commander of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, emphasized that communication underpins effective partnerships between allied forces.

“We train to be ready for anything that might happen in the future,” Kelley said. “There is no way you could do that on your own.”

He stressed that training in Poland delivers strategic value by demonstrating NATO’s commitment where it matters most.

“The strength of our allies together is how we demonstrate that resolve, that commitment,” Kelley explained. “You’ve got to do that in the place you may have to defend.”

Drone Technology Takes Center Stage

Following the live-fire exercise, organizers staged a static display featuring reconnaissance drones and armed unmanned systems capable of engaging enemy vehicles while operators remain at safe distances.

The display included Polish M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and AH-64D Apache helicopters positioned alongside American counter-drone technologies.

Demonstrations illustrated how unmanned and counter-unmanned systems complement heavy armor like the Abrams. These technologies provide reconnaissance, identify threats at extended ranges, and prevent adversaries from locating friendly positions.

Strategic Implications for Eastern Europe

The integration of drone and counter-drone capabilities with traditional armored forces reflects NATO’s evolving approach to defense along Poland’s eastern border.

Operation Winter Falcon 26 demonstrated how linking armored platforms with unmanned systems enhances readiness and strengthens overall defensive posture across the alliance.

The exercise underscores the growing importance NATO places on technological innovation in modern military operations. By combining proven platforms like the Abrams with emerging drone technologies, US and allied forces are adapting to contemporary battlefield challenges.

Poland has emerged as a critical hub for NATO activities in Eastern Europe, particularly following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The country hosts significant alliance infrastructure and has invested heavily in modernizing its armed forces with American equipment.

The joint demonstration sends a clear signal about alliance cohesion and readiness as NATO continues reinforcing its eastern defenses.
