BAE Systems has introduced Shadow EWâ„¢, a new family of compact electronic warfare (EW) systems built for small airborne platforms, as per a recent press statement. The solutions deliver situational awareness and self-defence capabilities to boost mission effectiveness in contested environments.
Meeting demand for scale and speed
Shadow EW marks a shift in how BAE Systems designs and delivers EW technology. The company aims to match the pace and scale required by the U.S. Department of War. It can manufacture the systems in high volumes at low cost, drawing on established production capabilities and a skilled workforce. The systems use commercial microchips for high-performance computing, which improves supply chain efficiency and speeds up delivery.
Director of Shadow EW products Rebecca Cruz commented: “The modern battlefield is changing at an unprecedented pace and all platforms, regardless of size, require adaptable electronic warfare capabilities to survive.” She added: “Shadow EW solutions provide flexible, configurable hardware paired with iterative software updates to counter rapidly evolving threats.”
Compact, upgradeable design
Shadow EW products are compact, lightweight and power efficient, supporting affordable, high-volume deployment and rapid integration. They are built on open architecture standards and remain field upgradeable through software-defined capabilities. The systems cover a broad range of EW missions, including situational awareness, targeting, deception, survivability and collaborative effects delivery.
BAE Systems will produce the Shadow EW family at its Cedar Rapids, Iowa facility, with software and design work carried out in Nashua, New Hampshire.
