British Army’s next-generation tank marks historic milestone with first UK firing of new MBT in over three decades

Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) has successfully conducted the first crewed live firing of the Challenger 3 main battle tank, marking a critical milestone in delivering Britain’s next-generation armoured capability.

The trials, conducted at a Ministry of Defence training centre, represent the first UK firing of a newly developed main battle tank in more than 30 years, according to RBSL. The achievement signals substantial progress in the modernisation programme that will equip the British Army with 148 upgraded tanks.

Phased Testing Approach

The firing trials followed a carefully structured testing regime designed to validate the tank’s systems before operational deployment. RBSL engineers initially conducted remote firings before progressing to crewed operations, ensuring the platform met rigorous safety and performance standards.

Challenger 3 mounts the Rheinmetall-manufactured 120mm smoothbore L55A1 cannon. The weapon system fires modern kinetic energy anti-tank rounds and programmable multipurpose ammunition, significantly enhancing lethality over the current Challenger 2.

“This is a hugely significant achievement for the Challenger 3 programme,” said Rebecca Richards, RBSL’s managing director. She highlighted that firing the vehicle remotely before placing crew in the turret reflected extensive work ensuring the design’s safety and robustness.

Richards described the milestone as “a proud moment for UK armoured vehicle development.”

Defence-Industry Collaboration

Mark Colley, the Army’s senior responsible owner for the programme, emphasised the close collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and industry partners. “The successful crewed firing of Challenger 3 demonstrates tangible progress in delivering the modernised main battle tank the British Army needs,” Colley stated.

The tank will now undergo additional trials as it advances toward operational service. Challenger 3 represents the centrepiece of the British Army’s broader modernisation efforts, delivering enhanced lethality, survivability and digital integration capabilities.

UK Industrial Impact

RBSL produces Challenger 3 at its Telford facility under a contract worth over £800 million. The programme has created approximately 300 skilled positions within RBSL, with an additional 450 jobs generated across the wider UK defence industrial base.

The contract attracted £40 million in inward investment to upgrade RBSL’s Telford factory. While the programme utilises a European supply chain, the majority of suppliers are UK-based small and medium enterprises distributed across the country—from the West Midlands and Glasgow to Newcastle upon Tyne and the Isle of Wight.

The Challenger 3 programme exemplifies international defence-industrial cooperation, bringing together British expertise with allied partners and specialist suppliers across the UK and Europe. This collaborative approach ensures the platform benefits from cutting-edge technologies while sustaining sovereign defence manufacturing capabilities.

As Challenger 3 progresses through its final testing phases, the British Army moves closer to fielding a main battle tank capable of meeting contemporary and future threats on the modern battlefield.
