Australia has taken delivery of its first MC-55A Peregrine airborne intelligence and surveillance aircraft, according to the Department of Defence, marking a significant enhancement to the nation’s reconnaissance capabilities.
The aircraft arrived at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia late last week. It is the first of four MC-55A platforms that will provide Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare (ISREW) capabilities for the Australian Defence Force.
Built on the Gulfstream G550 business jet airframe, the MC-55A has been extensively modified by US defence contractor L3Harris Technologies. The long-range platform is designed to collect and process multiple intelligence sources during Defence operations.
Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles said the Peregrine represents a major advancement in Australia’s ability to monitor strategic interests and maritime approaches. The platform will integrate with allied systems from the United Kingdom and United States, enabling real-time intelligence sharing that strengthens collective security and regional stability.
Strategic Role and Integration
The MC-55A will form a core element of Australia’s broader ISR architecture. It will operate alongside existing platforms including the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and MQ-4C Triton unmanned surveillance system, creating an integrated network of surveillance and electronic warfare assets.
Number 10 Squadron will operate the Peregrine fleet from RAAF Base Edinburgh. The unit will leverage the aircraft’s advanced sensors and electronic warfare systems to detect, disrupt and deter potential threats across Australia’s air and maritime domains.
Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Stephen Chappell described the MC-55A as more than just an aircraft. He emphasized it represents a strategic capability that reinforces Australia’s capacity to protect national interests amid an increasingly complex security environment.
Defence Industry Investment
Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy highlighted the investment as strengthening Australia’s sovereign intelligence and electronic warfare capabilities. The acquisition ensures the ADF maintains readiness for future security challenges, he said.
The MC-55A was identified as a critical enabler in the 2024 Integrated Investment Program. The platform will provide intelligence support across ADF missions, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making for commanders.
The Albanese Government has prioritized the ISREW capability as part of broader efforts to modernize Australia’s defence posture. The aircraft delivers persistent surveillance across vast oceanic and continental approaches, areas critical to Australia’s strategic geography.
Operational Significance
The Peregrine’s arrival comes as regional tensions drive increased focus on intelligence gathering and domain awareness. The platform’s long-range endurance and multi-sensor suite enable extended operations far from Australian shores.
Integration with partner nations’ systems will prove particularly valuable. Real-time data sharing with US and UK forces enhances coalition operations and provides Australia with access to a wider intelligence picture.
The remaining three MC-55A aircraft are expected to arrive progressively, with the fleet achieving full operational capability in coming years. Once complete, the Peregrine fleet will provide the RAAF with 24/7 airborne intelligence coverage when required.
