The US Space Force has selected Boeing to lead the next phase of its Mobile User Objective System Service Life Extension (MUOS SLE) programme, a contract worth up to $2 billion, as per a recent press statement.
The award covers two narrowband communications satellites, designed to prioritise reliable voice links and essential data for military users worldwide. Boeing expects to deliver the first satellite in 2031.
MUOS SLE will sustain and improve a communications capability relied upon by forces operating on land, at sea and in the air. The system is particularly important in environments where maintaining stable connections proves difficult.
Sam Greaves, vice president of Boeing Space Mission Systems, commented: “For the people who depend on this connectivity, the need is clear: secure communication that works in demanding conditions.” He added that the team understands the mission and stands ready to extend and improve a system users rely on daily.
Boeing draws on decades of experience in Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communications. The company developed and delivered payloads for the existing MUOS constellation. UHF signals maintain connectivity in challenging terrain, dense urban areas and severe weather, where other links often fail.
The new system builds on Boeing’s 702MP medium-class spacecraft platform, aiming to boost capacity, cut interference and improve overall connectivity.
Ryan Reid, senior director of Space Communications Programs at Boeing, commented: “This award builds on our deep UHF heritage and the trust we’ve built supporting this critical national security mission.” He added that the active 702MP production line brings execution momentum and schedule predictability to the Space Force.
Boeing has delivered multiple 702MP satellites since the fourth quarter of 2025, providing relevant production experience ahead of MUOS SLE execution.
