Japan Steel Works (JSW) has delivered its first Patria AMV XP 8×8 armoured personnel carrier (APC) to the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF).

Back in 2023 Japan chose the armoured modular vehicle (AMV) platform as the desired replacement for the JGSDF’s fleet of Type-96 8×8 vehicles. In doing so it became the ninth nation to start operating the family of wheeled AMVs, which come in a number of different variants.

Its modular design means the AMV platform can accommodate a range of different systems and can integrate various weapon systems, including cannons up to 120mm calibre as well as missile launchers.

The vehicle offers protection against ballistic threats as well as IEDs and NBC attacks, and its large run-flat wheels and independent suspension offer manoeuvrability and speed, even off-road, while its amphibious capability also enables aquatic operations.

Delivery of the first AMV was made this week in the wake of a hand-over ceremony held at the start of the month at JSW’s Muroran plant in Hokkaido, Japan.

Patria contracted the Japan Wheeled Armored Personnel Carrier WAPC programme to JSW in August 2023 in a deal that included technology transfer to Japan.

Patria’s Executive Vice President of its Protected Mobility division Jussi Järvinen commented: “This significant milestone demonstrates true and close cooperation between Patria, Japan Self-Ground Defense Forces, and Japan Steel Works, with successful results.

“Discussions are ongoing with the Japan Self-Defense Forces and local industry regarding new opportunities, and Patria is very committed to a long-term strategic cooperation with Japan.”

Patria is currently already engaged in a similar technology-transfer AMV 8×8 programme with Slovakia, and has previously carried out programmes in Poland, Croatia, and South Africa.
