A new $292 million contract to supply solid rocket motors for Javelin anti-tank missiles has been won by L3Harris.
The new deal, the largest propulsion production contract awarded for the projectiles to date, represents a five-year extension as part of the Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) programme, a partnership between Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.
The JJV programme produces the man-portable anti-tank system for the U.S. Army, Marine Corps and international customers. It has been in service since 1996 and is used by at least 25 countries worldwide.
The Javelin is a fire-and-forget self-guiding missile which locks on to a target ahead of launch. Its high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead strikes via top-down attack, hitting targets from above, where their armour is thinnest. It carries a tandem charge warhead to counter explosive reactive armour systems.
To date in excess of 50,000 Javelin missiles have been supplied to customers worldwide.
President of Aerojet Rocketdyne at L3Harris Ken Bedingfield commented: “Javelin provides a key capability for the United States, allies and partners.
“Our ongoing investments in modernized solid rocket motor manufacturing will allow us to increase production capacity for Javelin by incorporating the latest advancements in automation into the motor casting and installation processes.”
The firm says it is ramping up its rocket-motor production across a series of different programmes, investing in new manufacturing technology including digital workflows to enhance quality control and afford more flexibility on production rates.
