Lithuania has signed a supplemental agreement with the United States to acquire a second battery of the HIMARS High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, bringing the total combined contract value to approximately $778 million.
The agreement, signed between the U.S. Government and Lithuania’s Defence Materiel Agency, covers additional launchers, blank and live ammunition, guided missiles of varying types and combat characteristics, command, control and communications (C3) equipment, and a logistical support and maintenance package. Lockheed Martin will execute the contract.
“HIMARS is a mobile American artillery system used by 14 NATO and partner nations, proven on the battlefield in Ukraine,” said Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas. “We think and invest forward to continue strengthening the defensibility of our country, enemy deterrence, and our ability to defend the eastern flank alongside the Allies.”
Lithuania’s Defence Materiel Agency first signed with the United States in 2022, covering launchers, training equipment, personnel instruction, system integration, and incorporation into the NATO Integrated Air Defence System (NATINADS). The U.S. allies committed to delivering the first battery before year’s end. While awaiting delivery, Lithuanian Armed Forces personnel completed required training with a U.S. HIMARS unit currently stationed in Lithuania.
HIMARS is compatible with existing Lithuanian Armed Forces technology, allowing straightforward integration into current defence plans and directly reinforcing deterrence on NATO’s eastern flank.
The procurement deepens an already substantial defence relationship. According to Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence, Lithuanian purchases from the United States over the past three years total approximately €2 billion, making Lithuania the largest U.S. defence buyer in the Baltic region. Procurements include Javelin anti-tank systems, JLTV tactical vehicles, Black Hawk helicopters, and AMRAAM missiles for the NASAMS air defence system.
