Northrop Grumman and Boeing have successfully demonstrated automated manned-unmanned teaming between the MQ-4C Triton and P-8A Poseidon, marking a first for the two maritime patrol systems. The jointly funded technology demonstration, held in San Diego on 5 August 2026, showcased AI-enabled interoperability designed to sharpen anti-surface warfare and intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting (ISR&T) operations.
Machine-to-Machine Collaboration
During the lab demonstration, Triton and Poseidon exchanged maritime intelligence through a standardised interface, enabling automated mission planning across platforms. Triton’s onboard AI algorithms collected, processed and shared intelligence data after receiving a request from the P-8A system. This machine-to-machine exchange removed the need for manual coordination between operators.
The interface relies on the Universal Command and Control Interface, a collaboration standard built on Open Mission Systems and the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture. Because it uses open architecture, Triton can extend this collaboration to other U.S. or allied assets sharing the same standard, reducing operator workload and speeding commander decision-making.
Strategic Significance
Triton and Poseidon already form the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s maritime patrol and reconnaissance fleet. Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s global surveillance division, commented that the demonstration reinforces the companies’ investment in flexible, integrated defence solutions. Tory Peterson, vice president of Boeing’s P-8 Program, added that the teaming capability allows current and future operators to expand mission scope through low-risk, evolutionary upgrades.
As per a recent press statement, the demonstration signals a broader push toward standardised, AI-driven interoperability across manned and unmanned maritime platforms, with implications for allied navies operating both aircraft types.
