Germany and the Netherlands have placed a joint order for more than 3,000 Rheinmetall Caracal vehicles, cementing the platform’s role in future European rapid-deployment operations.

The two NATO allies have ordered a combined 3,058 vehicles for their airborne forces, with production already underway. Ukrainian special forces have also operated the platform since 2024, according to Rheinmetall, highlighting its early operational adoption and international relevance.

Developed through a partnership between Rheinmetall and Mercedes-Benz, the Caracal blends commercial automotive engineering with military-specific design. The platform combines Mercedes-Benz mobility systems with a newly developed military superstructure engineered by Rheinmetall.

According to Rheinmetall, the vehicle meets modern operational mobility requirements across airborne, special operations, and expeditionary missions. It focuses on speed, power, and modular adaptability, while maintaining logistical simplicity for multinational forces.

Designed for Airborne and Expeditionary Warfare

The Caracal platform integrates proven automotive technologies with advanced military features in tactics, safety, and performance. Rheinmetall says the vehicle delivers high mobility across diverse deployment scenarios, including rapid insertion operations and austere environments.

The platform supports modular integration of ballistic protection, weapon systems, and mission equipment. Operators can configure the vehicle with reconnaissance systems, secure communications suites, and modern battlefield management technologies, depending on mission profiles.

This modular approach allows armed forces to tailor the vehicle for airborne assault, special forces operations, reconnaissance, logistics, or command-and-control roles without changing the core platform.

Industrial Partnership and Production Model

The Caracal forms part of a broader strategic alliance between Rheinmetall and Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle operates alongside the new G-Class 464 military series, combining a mass-production automotive base with a scalable military design architecture.

Rheinmetall manages final assembly of mission-specific military equipment kits and retains the capability to manufacture and integrate these systems locally in customer countries. This industrial model supports national customization, domestic production capacity, and tailored fleet sizes.

The company also provides full life-cycle logistical support, positioning the platform as a long-term, globally sustainable solution for military fleets.

According to Rheinmetall, this structure reduces long-term operating costs while maintaining adaptability as operational requirements evolve.

International Demand and Operational Use

Orders from Germany and the Netherlands represent the largest known procurement to date. Ukraine’s operational use since 2024 further demonstrates the platform’s relevance in high-intensity operational environments, according to the company.

Rheinmetall reports enquiries from multiple additional countries, indicating growing international interest in the vehicle family as a next-generation light military mobility platform.
