NATO has selected Saab’s GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft as the preferred successor to its ageing surveillance fleet, with the Alliance preparing to enter formal negotiations for the purchase of up to 10 aircraft.
The announcement came during the NATO Summit in Ankara, Türkiye, where Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the Alliance will begin contract negotiations with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). Saab has stressed that no contract has yet been signed and no formal order has been placed.
NATO’s decision forms part of a wider modernisation programme aimed at strengthening the Alliance’s airborne surveillance, command and control, and situational awareness capabilities. The GlobalEye selection signals NATO’s intent to replace its existing AEW&C fleet with a more advanced multi-domain platform.
Saab President and CEO Micael Johansson welcomed the decision, describing it as an important milestone for the company and expressing confidence that GlobalEye will provide NATO with a long-term operational advantage. He said Saab now looks forward to progressing negotiations with the NSPA.
Based on the Bombardier Global 6500 business jet, GlobalEye integrates Saab’s Erieye Extended Range radar with a suite of advanced sensors and a multi-domain command and control system. The aircraft provides persistent surveillance across air, land and maritime domains, enabling operators to monitor large areas from a single platform.
According to Saab, the system can detect low-observable aircraft, drones, ballistic missiles and hypersonic threats while operating effectively in congested electromagnetic environments and under electronic jamming.
The planned acquisition reflects NATO’s continued focus on improving its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities as the Alliance adapts to an increasingly complex security environment. The programme will now move into formal contract negotiations, according to Saab’s announcement.
