Saab has revealed a full-scale concept model of a future uncrewed combat air system at an air show in Linköping, Sweden. The A3-001 concept demonstrates how crewed and uncrewed platforms could operate together within an integrated combat air system.
Building on Gripen’s Legacy
The uncrewed platform draws on Saab’s aerospace heritage and could complement Gripen and future crewed aircraft. Designers envision the concept for high-risk missions, including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defences, and precision strikes in contested environments. Low observability and a high degree of autonomy define the platform, alongside the ability to operate across multiple domains.
Development Timeline and Ambitions
Saab intends to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030, as per a recent press statement. Peter Nilsson, head of business unit Advanced Programs at Saab, commented: “We are currently in an intensive development phase where, together with Sweden, we are exploring technologies that will lay the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems.”
He added that the A3 system represents Saab’s own concept for a mid-2030s successor, should Sweden choose to build on current work. Nilsson noted Saab’s strong position to develop next-generation combat air systems, building on Gripen and GlobalEye alongside decades of aerospace experience.
Public Display Highlights System-of-Systems Approach
The full-scale model remains on public display throughout the Swedish Armed Forces Air Show. It illustrates a potential uncrewed component within a broader system-of-systems approach to future air warfare, reflecting growing international interest in manned-unmanned teaming for next-generation air combat capabilities.
