A UK-New Zealand autonomous systems firm will supply the New Zealand Defence Force with a suite of air, land, and maritime uncrewed platforms under a new capability development agreement.

SYOS Aerospace has secured a contract with the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) to deliver multi-domain autonomous vehicles and specialist support services. The deal covers uncrewed platforms across three domains and includes structured experimentation, evaluation, and training to advance the NZDF’s emerging technology capabilities.

The agreement supports New Zealand’s broader defence modernisation agenda. It reflects growing demand among mid-tier military powers for affordable, scalable autonomous systems that reduce operational risk and supply chain exposure.

Platform Portfolio

The contract covers a range of purpose-built uncrewed systems. In the air domain, the NZDF will receive the SA2 heavy-lift mini-copter, configured for advanced tactical ISR, alongside the SA7 — a one-way effector drone built for high-impact payload delivery. On land, the SG400 uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) provides heavy-duty autonomous ground mobility across demanding terrain. At sea, SYOS will also deliver the SM300 autonomous boat, designed for persistent maritime surveillance and long-range endurance missions.

Beyond hardware, the contract includes technical services, personnel training, and operational support. SYOS will work directly with the NZDF Capability Branch to conduct structured experimentation and capability evaluation — an approach the company says reflects how it partners with defence customers globally.

Strategic Fit

New Zealand Defence Minister Judith Collins welcomed the announcement, framing it in terms of supply chain resilience and strategic self-reliance. “Having cutting-edge drone technology developed and supported by local businesses will reduce supply chain risk and strengthen our resilience,” she said. “We’re building the future by equipping our Defence Force with innovative Kiwi products to keep our people safe.”

SYOS CEO and founder Sam Vye said the contract aligns with his company’s operational model. “The NZDF’s programme of structured experimentation aligns strongly with how we operate — working shoulder to shoulder with customers and end users to develop solutions that move beyond traditional approaches,” he said. Vye added that SYOS aims to contribute to the growth of New Zealand’s wider defence-technology ecosystem.

Company Background

Founded in 2021, SYOS operates as a joint UK-New Zealand business. It maintains research, development, and production facilities in both countries. Its maritime headquarters is based in Fareham, Portsmouth, while its aviation division operates from Mount Maunganui on New Zealand’s North Island. The company also maintains an operational and support presence in Ukraine, where its platforms have seen use in one of the world’s most active uncrewed systems environments.

SYOS gained further attention last month when the UK Ministry of Defence selected it as one of seven companies to progress to the next phase of Project NYX — a programme to develop autonomous wingman drones for the British Army’s Apache attack helicopter fleet.

The NZDF contract positions SYOS as a credible multi-domain autonomy supplier in the Indo-Pacific region, a theatre increasingly prioritised by Western defence planners. As New Zealand deepens its alignment with partners through frameworks such as AUKUS Pillar II — which focuses on advanced defence capabilities — agreements of this kind signal a deliberate push to modernise joint interoperability and technology integration.
