KNDS Acquires Texelis Defense to Bolster European Land Mobility Capabilities

French defence giant KNDS has completed its acquisition of Texelis Defense, rebranding the firm as KNDS Mobility in a move designed to deepen vertical integration and strengthen Europe’s land defence industrial base.

KNDS France finalised the deal on 2 April 2026, absorbing a specialist in military land mobility systems into its growing portfolio. The acquisition gives KNDS direct control over drivetrain technology and mobility solutions for both wheeled and tracked military platforms, capabilities it previously sourced externally.

Filling a Critical Gap

KNDS Mobility brings expertise covering wheeled vehicles from 4×4 to 8×8 configurations, alongside tracked systems. This closes the last remaining gap in KNDS’s technical coverage, which now spans mobility, protection, observation, attack systems, and mission systems across the full product lifecycle.

The timing is deliberate. European defence budgets are rising sharply amid sustained pressure on NATO allies to increase spending. Manufacturers face mounting demand to accelerate production and reduce reliance on third-party suppliers. Bringing mobility technology in-house directly addresses both challenges.

Serval Programme at the Centre

The acquisition carries immediate operational relevance. Within the French Army’s Serval light armoured vehicle programme, KNDS Mobility supplies the mobility solution while KNDS France handles vehicle integration and assembly. That relationship now operates within a single corporate structure, streamlining the supply chain and accelerating development cycles.

According to the KNDS press release, all existing contracts, partnerships, and customer commitments transfer intact. Operational teams remain in place and ongoing programmes continue without interruption.

Industrial and Strategic Rationale

The deal reflects a broader consolidation trend across European land defence. KNDS, formed from the merger of France’s Nexter and Germany’s KMW, has positioned itself as the continent’s leading land systems manufacturer. Securing key suppliers reduces vulnerability to supply chain disruption, a lesson the defence industry absorbed sharply following post-pandemic shortages and the demands of re-arming Ukraine’s allies.

Nicolas Groult, CEO of KNDS France, described the transaction as “a pivotal step,” stating it consolidates the group’s technological capabilities and strengthens autonomy over critical systems.

Jean Vandel, who led Texelis Defense and now heads KNDS Mobility, framed the merger as a natural industrial move. “We share the same vision for land defence, the same ambition for our teams, and the same drive to move forward,” he said.

French Industrial Footprint Expands

KNDS Mobility operates production sites in Limoges and Roanne, both established nodes within France’s defence manufacturing network. Their integration deepens KNDS’s geographic and industrial presence domestically, reinforcing France’s position as a major land systems producer.

The group says the merger opens new international growth opportunities for KNDS Mobility’s teams, targeting both government customers and industrial partners worldwide.

Outlook

Beyond immediate production demands, KNDS has identified energy optimisation, platform autonomy, and advanced mobility as the key areas KNDS Mobility will help develop. As European armies modernise ageing fleets and invest in next-generation armoured platforms, control of drivetrain and mobility technology carries growing strategic weight.

The acquisition positions KNDS to compete more aggressively for future programmes, domestically and across NATO partner nations, where integrated, sovereign supply chains are increasingly a prerequisite for contract eligibility.
