Saab has won a contract worth approximately SEK 1.2 billion ($110 million) from Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply sensors and command-and-control systems for a new ground-based air defence (GBAD) solution for Swedish Army brigades, according to Saab.
The agreement supports Sweden’s ongoing effort to strengthen national and brigade-level air defence capabilities amid a more challenging European security environment. Saab said deliveries will take place between 2029 and 2030.
The contract builds on previous deliveries made by Saab to FMV and aims to improve the Swedish Army’s ability to detect, track and respond to increasingly sophisticated aerial threats. The systems will provide commanders with enhanced situational awareness and faster decision-making during air defence operations.
“This will strengthen the ground-based air defence capability of the Swedish Army brigades,” said Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s Surveillance business area. He added that the order reflects confidence in Saab’s Giraffe AMB radar and the company’s GBAD command-and-control system.
Enhanced Brigade Air Defence
The procurement centres on Saab’s Giraffe AMB radar and associated command-and-control technology. The system supports short- to medium-range air defence missions and helps military units identify airborne threats while maintaining operational freedom of manoeuvre.
Saab said the combination of surveillance radar and integrated command-and-control functions provides a rapid picture of the air environment. This enables forces to react quickly to evolving threats and changing battlefield tactics.
The order forms part of Sweden’s broader investment in military modernisation. Stockholm has accelerated defence spending in recent years as regional security concerns have intensified and armed forces seek stronger protection against aircraft, drones and other airborne threats.
For Saab, the contract further reinforces its position as a key supplier of air defence and surveillance systems to the Swedish Armed Forces.
