The UK government has launched the Rapid AI Delivery Taskforce (RAID), a new unit designed to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) deployment across Britain’s Armed Forces. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the initiative during London Tech Week, marking a decisive shift in the country’s approach to defence technology.

Reporting directly to the Chief of the Defence Staff, RAID will equip soldiers, sailors, and aircrew with AI-enabled tools faster than before. The taskforce will help troops decide faster, plan more effectively, and deploy uncrewed systems to reduce risk to human life.

As per a recent press statement, Prime Minister Starmer commented: “We are taking control of our future and launching a new taskforce to get cutting-edge AI into the hands of our Armed Forces safely, quickly, and responsibly.”

Defence Secretary John Healey MP added: “Technology is rapidly changing the nature of warfare and we are keeping our forces at the cutting edge to maintain an advantage over our adversaries.”

Led by military and technical experts, RAID operates with exemptions from standard financial and procedural controls, giving it freedom to match the pace of the technology it deploys. Initial priorities include building AI systems to process intelligence data rapidly and embedding AI into military planning to generate adaptable plans at speed.

Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton added: “The focus of Taskforce RAID is on delivering necessary operational capability, quickly.”

RAID will also engage the British technology sector to lower barriers to entry into defence and support UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The first announced industry partner is Rowden, which recently secured £25 million from the National Wealth Fund to create 500 jobs and develop sovereign national security technology.

The taskforce launch coincides with a new department-wide directive from the Defence Secretary, instructing all personnel to adopt a more urgent posture towards AI.
