Shield AI Wins U.S. Air Force Production Contract to Deploy Hivemind Autonomy on Collaborative Combat Aircraft

Shield AI has secured a production contract from the U.S. Air Force to implement its Hivemind mission autonomy software across the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programme, as per a recent press statement.

The award reflects the Air Force’s software-first autonomy strategy, which separates mission autonomy from the aircraft platform itself. Enabled by the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture (A-GRA), the service can now iterate and upgrade software independently of the airframe. This reduces integration costs, preserves competition across the CCA ecosystem, and lowers programme risk.

Under the contract, Shield AI will develop collaborative combat autonomy behaviours enabling multiple autonomous aircraft to operate together under human supervision. The approach reduces operator workload and enables coordinated operations at scale across multiple platforms.

Senior Vice President of Hivemind at Shield AI, Christian Gutierrez, commented: “Mission autonomy is a foundational capability for future airpower. The Air Force’s approach enables faster innovation, rapid capability deployment, and greater operational advantage for the warfighter.”

Gutierrez added: “We’re excited to continue our partnership with the Air Force to field collaborative autonomy and deliver these capabilities at scale.”

Earlier this year, Shield AI was selected as a mission autonomy provider for the CCA programme following a competitive Technology Maturation and Risk Reduction (TMRR) evaluation. Hivemind is currently flying aboard Anduril’s YFQ-44A aircraft as part of those ongoing development efforts.

Hivemind is a platform-agnostic, A-GRA compliant software system that enables unmanned platforms to sense, decide, and act. Unlike conventional autopilots, it can respond dynamically to obstacles, execute collaborative tactics with both autonomous and piloted aircraft, and operate effectively within a human-machine team.
