The U.S. Army has picked Northrop Grumman to develop a new variant of the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS) built for greater survivability and mobility, according to Northrop Grumman. The company will deliver two manufacturing prototypes by June 2027.

A protected van replaces the tent

The $21 million effort centres on a modified IBCS Integrated Collaborative Environment. Northrop Grumman will replace the original tent with a more protected van. Its interior expands through deployable sides, which creates extra room for soldiers, equipment and mission systems.

The configuration supports six operator workstations and four staff operation stations. It also speeds up set-up and tear-down, and lets crews adapt to changing mission needs.

Part of a wider upgrade effort

The Army continues to evolve IBCS for expeditionary missions and layered homeland defence. Planned improvements include a smaller footprint, automation to support decision-making and modernised software for faster capability updates. Northrop Grumman is contributing more than $10 million in internal investment and cost-sharing, which the company says reduces integration risk and speeds delivery to the warfighter.

Kenn Todorov, vice president and general manager of command and control and weapons integration at Northrop Grumman, said the investments are turning IBCS into “an ever-more capable combat multiplier.” He said the upgrade gives warfighters greater protection and faster access to advanced command and control technology.

Background on IBCS

IBCS fuses sensor data from any source, service or domain into a single picture of the battlespace. Its “any sensor, best shooter” approach gives operators more time to assess and respond to threats. The system is in full-rate production and is operational in Poland. It is also fielded for Combatant Commands in Europe and the Indo-Pacific as part of the Army’s integrated air and missile defence modernisation programme.
